Is it really badge engineering if it is their own car being sold under their own brand?

Yes, see GM circa 2000.

Like I said:
I've been promised a mix of American attitude and Italian style! All I see are some bits of Mazda 6 and Dart with a dubious back and a front that would've been cool in 2001, maybe. Oh well, Chrysler will be Chrysler.

Well we have no idea how much dart DNA is actually shared with the 200.

Same platform, eerily similar body lines.

No, this was badge engineering.
Chrysler just seems too lazy to create an exciting design language, for its brands.

Similar body lines, but I don't think a shrunken down 300 would have looked that good.
Dart/Cherokee platform is turning out to be quite good. My moms dart handles and rides quite well for a small car. I would actually say the ride is better than my co-workers '13 200.

A shrunken 300 would look just fine.

I would have liked to have seen this though: (It has some of the 300 styling and mimicks the body lines enough but its not the 300 by a longshot)
One thing that confuses me on the spyshots above is the horizontal tail lights. The 300 and T&C have vertical, not horizontal. Granted this new face is a long stretch from traditional styling too so maybe a new direction is coming.
I dont like it when all of the cars look exactly the same. I love Audi's, but I like the cars that don't look like a reduced copy (A7, TT, RS5).
